Now this is somethin'.......

Here's some incredible amateur video of an African safari.

Lions vs water buffalo vs crocodiles with a finale featuring the water buffalo calvary to the rescue.

It's a bit long around 10 minutes, but well worth your time.

Facebook

I've always thought that the myriad of internet social networks would coalesce into one or two universal access points and be the frontend of the internet for most people. Among other things, it would be where you found updates (text, pictures, and video) of your communities (family, friends, and interests). I assumed Google or perhaps a social network enabled browser (probably Firefox) would be the company that put this together. I now think you now have to put Facebook into that group.

Evidently, over the weekend Facebook opened up their platform to a whole litany of applications (Twitter, iLike etc.). In doing so I think they've edged much closer than anybody else to providing a universal social network. At the very least, I think it makes the founders decision to turn down last year's $750M buyout offer incredibly smart.

BTW, I have had a Facebook profile for a couple of months, but have done little with it (I do have 2 friends). That's starting to change as I've been playing with their new bells and whistles. I'll keep you posted.

Field Trip: Once

Not a bad way to spend an afternoon. It's a nice little movie with appealing characters. I just wish the music (Glenn Hansard, The Frames) was a little more memorable.

On Radar: The Hold Steady

Craig Finn looks like a middle school math teacher, writes lyrics full of clever pop references, sounds like Springsteen, and has a band that kicks ass. They'll be in San Diego (Canes) next Friday. I'll be there

Web 2.0

The term Web 2.0 has been used so much and in so many ways that it has probably become meaningless, but the concept of building communities around a common purpose is thriving.

An example: In April Carly committed to attend Cal Poly SLO. Shortly thereafter someone created a Facebook community called Cal Poly SLO Class of 2011. Within a month, the SLO 2011 community has over 800 members actively discussing dorms, roommates, majors, music, and plans for summer meet-ups.

Field Trip: The Damnwells

Last night after making a deposit in the Bank of Sleep, I headed to the Casbah for a show. The band I wanted see was The Damnwells, who were the third group scheduled to perform.

I arrived at what I thought was fashionably late at 9:30, but unfortunately Mozella the first performer was just taking the stage. So, I sat through Mozella (generic singer songwriter - female) and then Ari Hest (generic singer songwriter - male). The Damnwells didn't start until 11:30. I made it to a little after midnight when what's left of my adult brain sent me home.

The Damnwells are a very solid outfit, the SD crowd though enthusiastic was quite small and a tad less star studded than their Troubadour show in LA Scarlett

Field Trip: Modest Mouse

A first! Last night's show included crowd surfing, stage diving, and a mosh pit. It made for a highly entertaining sideshow. Great show, but probably just outside my top five.

Field Trip: Bright Eyes (Conor Orbest)

Last night Carly and I headed over to the sweltering SOMA to check out Bright Eyes. In the genre of music that I listen to (guitar based with roots in Dylan, Young, Simon, etc.) Coner Orbest is something of an icon. However, I have never much cared for him. To me, he comes across as an immature whiner, so I went to the concert with low expectations.

Surprise. Surprise. The dude blew me away. He's touring with a band of about a dozen musicians that give CO's songs a power and depth that was really impressive.

I'm putting last night's show in my top 5 of concerts I've seen the last 12 months.

My current rankings:

1. Ryan Adams (duh)
2. Bright Eyes
3. My Morning Jacket
4. Ben Kweller and Gomez
5. Amos Lee

OK OK. I've been negligent. I take full responsibility and will be checking into rehab soon.

The Lack of Blogs is do to an Alien who is eating Chips Cheese

This was a top story in the San Diego City Newspaper

On April 14, 2007, a man by the name of Charles Clark was accused of slapping an alien. When questioned the Clark said he had to do it because "the alien was eating my cheese! I just couldn't take it any more, I had to take action." According to Clark the alien has been eating his cheese for about 4 months now. Some of you may ask yourself, where did this alien come from? Well I am here to inform you that aliens are all around us. Some of them serve you breakfast, some make pancakes, but most of them just sneak into peoples houses during the day and eat all the cheese out of your fridge.
Charles Clark was one of the first humans to fight back. His plan was to stay home for a week and when ever the alien showed up he would just slap the alien across the face. On his first day home, he realized that it was not just one alien that came, it was two! He knew he could take on one alien, but not two. He needed a new plan. Clark enlisted the help of his lovely dog Winnie. Since Winnie ate alot of human food, she had some really bad gas. Charles thought that if he could teach his dog to fart on command, then he could distract the aliens long enough to slap them both. On the 4th day of staying home, Clark and his dog Winnie put their plan into action. The aliens showed up at about half past eleven in the morning. Winnie and Chip were ready for them. After the aliens opened the fridge, Winnie farted and Chip slapped them. They then ran away. But little did Chip know, the aliens have rights just like us. The alien whose name is Xhosjdtotsllasd (which cannot be pronounced by humans) is now suing Mr. Clark. His family is devistated. How can someone be treated like this for protecting his home?
So the past month Mr. Charles Clark has been very busy defending himself in court, therefore there is a lack of updates on his blog. I just thought I would let you know, since I know you guys have all been very worried.

Thanks for listening,
Happiness!
