Office Bloopers

A lot of it is standard blooper fare, but there is enough funny stuff to make it worth watching.

Ohmigod!

Carly and I hung out with Ben Kweller tonight.

Update: As Ben Kweller's music tends to be on the pop end of the rock spectrum, quite a few of his fans spend their days passing notes in their algebra I classes. So, last night's concert was an all ages event, meaning Carly and I were confined to the pre-21 purgatory balcony at the HOB. Our view of the stage while not great wasn't terrible either. It improved greatly when a bunch a people left after Kweller's set.

About an hour into Gomez's set (which was most excellent) I turned around and was a bit surprised to see Mr. Kweller helping some fans with their algebra homework. We chatted, I took Carly's picture, and let him get back to his tutorial. He seemed like a really good guy.

Carly and I are off to the HOB. Details to follow.

Field Trip: Pete Yorn

It's late and there's not much to say except boy, the ladies sure do like Mr. Yorn.

Update: Not much to add. Yorn's a pro. Good band. good songs, solid performance. Did I mention that the ladies like him?

It's back to the HOB tonight for Ben Kweller and Gomez. I better take a nap.

For Geeks Only

This video is certainly is from the realm of the uber-geek and a bit pompous, but at the same time it is very clever. It's worth 4 minutes of your time.

Ryan Kensrue or Dustin Adams

After listening to Kensrue's tunes a few times, methinks at the very least he's got a severe man crush on Ryan Adams. Listen to Kensrue's Pistol and Adams's Come Pick Me Up and see what you think.

Man Crush?

Field Trip: Eliot Morris

There's a generation of kids now in their 20s and 30s who were raised from the crib listening to The Beatles, Dylan, Neil Young, Paul Simon, etc. so I guess it's no great surprise that there are a bunch young musicians that are making music that appeals to old guys like me. I went up to the Belly Up last night to see Eliott Morris. He did a really nice set. Morris told a story about how his parents listened to Paul Simon's Graceland CD about a million times so it was a nice moment when he added a little Graceland to the backend of one of his songs. He also covered Young's Heart of Gold.

I think everyone should buy his CD. He seemed like a good kid, and he obviously has great parents.

Morris opened for Bob Schneider. Schneider, one of Austin's mainstays, plays frat party rock, country, rap, reggae, and blues. His fans were out in force and very enthusiastic. I left about half through.

Seeqpod

There are a lot of excellent music sites out there (Pandora, last.fm, ilike, etc. etc.) and here's yet another one to add to the mix. Seeqpod lets you search for songs, create playlists, and share them. The site is clean and simple which I've grown to admire in a web site.

So, expect an email soon with a playlist that's worth a listen.

Only Fools Are Enslaved By Time and Space

I'm not quite sure if the reason that I continue to watch Lost is that it's great television or that I've invested 2.5 years of my attention, but I continue to watch. On Wednesday's episode some poor sap was getting some Clockwork Orange brainwashing treatment. And, of course, some dude took the audio and reversed it.

For you Losties there is something interesting at about the 30 second mark.

Field Trips

I'm going to try to make an extra deposit or two at the sleep bank because I'm going to attempt a live music marathon next weekend.

Here's the plan:

Friday -- Eliot Morris/Rob Dougherty BellyUp
Sunday -- Neko Case BellyUp
Monday -- Pete Yorn HOB
Tuesday -- Ben Kweller/Gomez HOB

Now that I see it writing, I have my doubts.
